Symphony No 1 shows Beethoven gaining musical independence from his symphonic predecessors, Haydn and Mozart. The famous ‘Ode to Joy’ lies in Symphony No 9, taken from a poem by German author Friedrich Schiller. Fellow composer Robert Schumann said of Beethoven’s first and last symphonies, ‘Do not seek to extract the unusual, go back to the roots of creation; demonstrate his genius not through his last symphony … you can do this just as well through his first’.
