BRUCKNER Symphony No 6

After being urged by his wife Clara to augment his Fantasy for Piano and Orchestra into a full concerto, Schumann’s Piano Concerto is the only one he finished, despite starting several others previously. Bruckner set out to compose his Sixth Symphony taking a reflective look at the previous two which had yet to be premiered; consequently it was coined the ‘Philosophical’ symphony by his critics. However, with some of the richest harmonies and most imaginative orchestration Bruckner had written, he thought it the ‘boldest’ of all nine of his symphonies.
