NB: Change of concerto
Overview

Maria João Pires
BEETHOVEN Piano Concerto No 2
BRUCKNER Symphony No 9

Maria João Pires piano

Beethoven's periodic efforts to perfect his Second Piano Concerto meant it was only ready for performance, thanks to a team of backstage copyists, literally moments before it was due to go on stage. Continually distracted by the numerous revisions he felt compelled to make to his earlier symphonies, Bruckner was still at work on his Ninth Symphony the day he died and so left just three movements and a pile of sketches of a work he had chosen to dedicate ‘to the beloved God’.
Change of programme
At the request of the soloist, the concerto being performed will now be Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No 2 rather than Mozart’s Piano Concerto No 17, which will now be played at the concert on Tuesday 12 February 2013.
[change announced 29 Aug 2012]
