Although the epithet of 'Emperor' was a later addition to Beethoven's Fifth Piano Concerto, thought up by the English publisher, its suggestion of grandeur and heroism is apt for this bold, virtuosic work. Elgar wrote his First Symphony amidst widespread clamour for a great British symphony; its premiere lived up to expectations, and Hans Richter (the dedicatee and first conductor) dubbed it 'the greatest symphony of modern times'.
Change of conductor
Sir Colin Davis is recovering from a recent illness and has sadly had to withdraw from the LSO concert on 18 October.
The programme will remain the same and we are pleased to announce that Vasily Petrenko, Chief Conductor of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, will now lead the Orchestra in Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No 5 with soloist Simon Trpceski and Elgar’s Symphony No 1.
Regarding his future concerts, we expect Sir Colin to be joining the Orchestra again for his engagements in November and December and very much look forward to his return.
