Prokofiev’s ‘Classical’ symphony is an exercise in agility, capturing what the composer so admired about Haydn’s symphonies – their uplifting and perfectly proportioned character. Gubaidulina’s use of the bayan is highly purposeful: the instrument’s mechanics and timbre mirror the practice of timber framing to which the work’s title Fachwerk refers, where solid construction underpins a charming outer appearance. The irresistible combination of dancing rhythms and yearning surfaces in Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony, a bedrock of the Romantic repertoire.
