Valery Gergiev conducted the premiere of Shchedrin’s impassioned Lithuanian Saga in Vilnius in 2009. This programme includes two earlier Russian masterpieces. Shostakovich’s darkly brilliant Violin Concerto (1948) was only performed after Stalin’s death. The original soloist, David Oistrakh, called the demanding central part ‘a Shakespearean role.’ Tchaikovsky loved folk music, and when he was staying with his sister in the Ukraine, he wove local songs into his merry-hearted Second Symphony (1872).

The LSO is deeply saddened by the recent events in Japan, having built a long standing relationship with the country since our first tour there in 1963; our most recent trip was last November to Tokyo, Osaka, Niigata and Chiba with Valery Gergiev who also has a long-standing commitment to Japanese audiences. We would like to dedicate tonight’s concert to all those who have been affected by the devastating earthquake and subsequent tsunami, and send our deepest sympathies.
