Described by Berlioz as a 'dramatic legend', The Damnation of Faust is somewhere between a symphony and an opera, drawing on the combined power of orchestra, chorus and soloists to tell the work's gripping tale.
Based on a drama by the German writer Goethe, it follows an idealistic but disillusioned scholar who is tempted by the devil. The dazzling score brings the drama to life, with students' songs, a Hungarian march, yearning love music and, finally, a demonic descent to hell all making an appearance.
Change of soloist
Unfortunately Ildar Abdrazakov has withdrawn from this concert for personal reasons. The role of Mephistopheles in The Damnation of Faust will now be sung by Mirco Palazzi. We are grateful to Mr Palazzi for agreeing to step in at short notice.
