When his patroness, Nadezhda von Meck, originally asked Tchaikovsky to write a piano trio in 1880, Tchaikovsky replied ‘I cannot endure the combination of piano with violin or cello. To my mind the timbre of these instruments will not blend’. However, in 1881 Tchaikovsky’s mentor Nikolai Rubinstein died and so Tchaikovsky saw fit to change his mind and as a tribute was ‘thinking of experimenting with this sort of music, which so far I have not touched’.
