LSO St Luke's
BBC Radio 3 Lunchtime Concert: Nicola Benedetti and Friends
Overview

Nicola Benedetti
BIBER Passacaglia
BACH Partita in D minor BWV1004
YSAYE Violin Sonata No 5 in G major
Nicola Benedetti violin
Felix Mendelssohn famously once asked his orchestra’s leader to play the Chaconne from the D minor Partita in concert. The violinist refused, saying that he would ‘look such a fool standing alone on a platform with a violin’, forcing Mendelssohn to write out a piano accompaniment. Here, Nicola Benedetti returns the Partita to its roots as a solo piece intended to showcase the mastery of its player. Conjuring a sunrise in its first movement, Ysaÿe’s Fifth Sonata perfectly fuses virtuosity and intense musical expression.
