Schoenberg took Richard Dehmel's poem of the same title as the literary basis of his string sextet Verklärte Nacht, using rich chromaticism to tell the story of two lovers' nocturnal walk. Hartmann's Concerto funèbre, written in response to the rise of the Nazi regime, carries a message of intense regret in its poignant solo violin lines, while the destruction of World War II provoked Strauss to write his elegiac Metamorphosen.
