Some of Brahms’ most romantic and melancholy Lieder such as ‘Ständchen’ (‘Serenade’), with its themes of moonlight, fountains and sleeping maidens, and the impassioned weeping of ‘Sapphische Ode’ are set alongside Schumann’s 12 poems by Justinus Kerner, which are drenched in feelings of world-weariness and isolation.
