As Bach completed Book I of The Well-Tempered Clavier in 1722, he modestly said that is was ‘for the use and practice of musical youth eager to learn and for the amusement of those already skilled in this study’. Moreover, Bach also had the technical agenda of demonstrating the viability of the new ‘equal-temperament’ tuning system, which allows the harpsichordist to play in all keys without the risk of playing any out-of-tune intervals.
