Strauss’s vigorous tone poem Don Juan (1888) was composed following an Italian holiday, the composer eagerly embracing the challenge of capturing the legendary seducer’s vertiginous career. Also sprach Zarathustra (1896) may seem even more remarkable – a vaunting orchestral piece based on Nietzsche’s philosophical treatise.

Change of programme
Ravel’s Piano Concert in G will replace Mozart’s Piano Concerto No 23 at the request of the soloist, Hélène Grimaud. The rest of the concert is unchanged.
