‘Only in sleep, religious experience and art are we able to experience lasting present time.’ So says Sofia Gubaidulina whose violin concerto, In tempus praesens, revels in the musical moment – ethereal, transient and beautiful. As her mentor, Shostakovich encouraged Gubaidulina to forge her own musical language, despite elements being deemed ‘irresponsible’ by Soviet Russia; his Tenth Symphony displays similar defiance, punching its way through to a brazen and exhilarating end.
