Liadov’s floating miniature evokes the ripples and swirls of an idealised waterside – in the composer’s words ‘How picturesque it is … the multitude of stars hovering over the mysteries of the deep’. Following the success of his first concerto for Anne-Sophie Mutter, Rihm’s elegant Lichtes Spiel (Light Games) was born. Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto prizes passionate virtuosity, while Shostakovich’s Sixth Symphony exhibits the Soviet composer’s trademark colossal emotional power.
