The slow movement fared best, with the silken strings of the LSO at their most alluring. The movement is full of so many beautiful themes that it can stand up to being lingered over. The return of the fabulous main solo cello theme (Rebecca Gilliver) was my highlight of the evening.

A diamantine fanfare from Tippett’s The Mask of Time ushered in a glowing rendition of the composer’s Concerto for Double String Orchestra, whose springy outer movements surround a hauntingly songlike core, distinguished by a beautiful solo from the LSO’s leader, Carmine Lauri.

There really isn’t a better orchestra for Elgar in London than the LSO, and this is in large part thanks to Davis. Hearing the ensemble under Harding finding such a passionate vivace at the start in the composer’s unfashionably ardent “Spirit of Delight” theme was to be reminded just how well this music responds to sincerity. There wasn’t a whisper of doubt from the orchestra or Harding in a performance that took this late work at face value

Here the opening ‘Fanfare’ was bracing and bristling with excitement... how incisive and galloping the LSO strings were in ‘Villes’, how vibrant during further places, and how persuasive and sensitive at other times.

... those final chords – the dark clouds of war gathering, the love that dare not speak its name under threat – were chillingly sounded and the ensuing silence, held so grippingly by Harding, was testament to the unsettling drama of the performance.

I thought the LSO played magnificently. We all know this is a splendid orchestra with fine principals, but nevertheless performances can vary from excellent to stunning. Tonight it was stunning. They love playing for Harding, as well they should.

Without doubt, this must rank as one of the Proms of the Season. Barenboim’s Ring remains a sovereign achievement, of course, but the combination of the LSO on top form under its principal conductor and with one of the finest pianists in front of the public today, the young Daniil Trifonov, was a winning one....The repertoire, artists and venue all came together on this particular evening to create a memorable Summer experience. Just what the Proms is all about.

Other LSO trademarks included clipped rhythms, vivid colours, lurid drama and top-level technical security. The peak of glossy perfection was reached in the Mussorgsky-Ravel Pictures at an Exhibition.

The medieval edifice in Il Vecchio Castello may have been seen through a quasi-mystical haze but the squabbling children (Tuileries) and the bustle of the marketplace (Limoges) were delineated with immediacy.

the alternate energy and mystery of ‘The Hunt on Hen’s Legs’, with its vivid depiction of Baba-Yaga, made for a bracing transition into ‘The Great Gate of Kiev’ – its combination of grandeur and introspection finely marshalled towards a resounding peroration, and with the LSO at something near its virtuosic best.
