Rachmaninov’s Isle of the Dead takes its inspiration from a mysterious painting by Swiss artist Arnold Böcklin in which a solitary figure stands over a coffin as it crosses the dark water. Refusing to start work until World War II was over, Korngold uses his Violin Concerto to symphonically re-cast themes from his Hollywood film scores. Angered over the success of Shostakovich’s Symphony No 7, Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra brandishes a vulgarised version of one of Shostakovich’s military themes with Hungarian melodies.
