LSO St Luke's
BBC Radio 3 Lunchtime Concert: Barry Douglas
Beethoven series
Overview

Barry Douglas
BEETHOVEN Piano Sonata No 11 in B flat major
BEETHOVEN Piano Sonata No 21 in C major (‘Waldstein’)
Barry Douglas piano
Talking to his publisher about the Op 22 sonata, Beethoven assured him that ‘Die Sonate hat sich gewaschen’ (The Sonata has washed itself), for which the closest English idiom is ‘takes the biscuit’. Also known as ‘L’aurora’ for the sonority of the opening chords of its third movement, Op 53 gains its name from its dedication to Beethoven’s friend and patron Count Waldstein, and is one of the composer’s most technically challenging solo piano works.
