LSO St Luke's
BBC Radio 3 Lunchtime Concert: Khatia Buniatishvili
Beethoven Series
Overview

Khatia Buniatishvili
BEETHOVEN Piano Sonata No 17 in D minor (‘Tempest’)
BEETHOVEN Piano Sonata No 19 in G minor
BEETHOVEN Piano Sonata No 23 in F minor (‘Appassionata’)
Khatia Buniatishvili piano
Although not his own choice of name, Beethoven notably remarked that he had ‘Just read Shakespeare’s The Tempest’ as he wrote Op 31 No 2, which becomes strikingly apparent from the first movement’s incessantly volatile nature. Together with Op 49 No 2, No 1 is a lighter, two movement sonata and is one of the Leichte Sonaten composed as gifts to friends and students. The ‘Appassionata’ shows Beethoven at his most violent and intense musically.
