Sonata Op 10 No 3 heralds the start of Beethoven’s forward-looking experiments in style. Op 78 bears a dedication to Countess Thérèse, whose unrequited love for the composer led her to give him a portrait inscribed ‘To the unique genius’. Beethoven started work on Op 81a in anticipation of a French invasion in 1809. Politically on-trend, Beethoven’s publisher insisted on giving the sonata the French title ‘Les adieux’ (farewell).
