Beethoven fills Op 14 No 2 with twists and turns, tricks of metre and rhythm, showing himself at his most playful. The delicate textures of Op 54 were written as a form of light relief from the stressful time Beethoven had while drafting his opera Leonore, the first version of Fidelio. Beethoven’s ‘Pastoral’ Sonata earned its title because of its idyllic charm and overarching tranquility.
