The Prelude to Strauss’ Capriccio, an opera about opera, stages the composer’s preoccupation with the theme of words versus music and which Strauss himself called a ‘second Rosenkavalier without the longueurs’. As the immediate despair Brahms felt at the death of friend and fellow composer Robert Schumann subsided, his String Sextet shows a refreshing sense of light and optimism.
