Mozart’s Piano Trio in G major is famed for its elegant, cheerful simplicity, placing subtle shifts of colour alongside peasant dance melodies. Prompted by musical allies Clara Schumann and Joseph Joachim, Brahms’ Piano Quintet in F minor underwent several re-arrangements before it reached its final form. Of an older version, violinist Joachim said that ‘what is lacking, to give me pure pleasure, is, in a word, charm’.
