Haydn’s Piano Trio in G Major is subtitled ‘Gypsy Rondo’ because of its Hungarian finale, a reflection of the years that Haydn spent at the court of Esterházy on the Hungarian border. Also gypsy-inspired, Brahms’ Piano Quartet in G minor followed his friend Joseph Joachim’s own ‘Hungarian’ Concerto, who wrote to Brahms, ‘You have outstripped me of my own territory by a considerable track’.
