BBC Radio 3 Lunchtime Concert: Nicholas Angelich
Beethoven Series
Overview

Nicholas Angelich
BEETHOVEN Piano Sonata No 5 in C minor
BEETHOVEN Piano Sonata No 12 in A flat major
BEETHOVEN Piano Sonata No 14 in C sharp minor (‘Moonlight’)
Nicholas Angelich piano
With a nod to Mozart’s own C minor sonata, Beethoven’s Op 10 No 1 looks forward to the moods and structures of his celebrated Fifth Symphony. The ‘Funeral March’ sonata was originally born of rivalry following a visit to virtuoso pianist Johann Baptist Cramer and sparked in Beethoven a need to break away from the formal constraints of his earlier sonatas. The instantly recognisable ‘Moonlight’ sonata has always been associated with Beethoven’s feelings for Countess Guicciardi but was only dedicated to her once Beethoven’s intended sonata for her had to be swiftly given to another patron.
