LSO St Luke's
BBC Radio 3 Lunchtime Concert: Nicola Benedetti and Friends
Overview

Nicola Benedetti
RAVEL Violin Sonata
RAVEL Tzigane
STRAUSS Violin Sonata in E flat major Op 18
Nicola Benedetti violin
Alexei Grynyuk piano
Ravel claimed that in writing his sonata for ‘two fundamentally incompatible instruments [violin and piano], I assumed the task, far from bringing their differences into equilibrium, of emphasising their irreconcilability through their independence’. The French word for ‘gypsy’, Tzigane, musically illustrates Ravel’s interest in gypsy folklore. Strauss composed his Violin Sonata while drenched in the romance of his relationship with Pauline de Ahna, who later became his wife.
