Tonight's concert will also feature the world premiere of Vlad Maistorovici's Halo. This new work was commissioned by the LSO Discovery Panufnik Young Composers Scheme, generously supported by the Helen Hamlyn Trust. The piece will be conducted by Clemens Schuldt.

Beethoven’s celebratory Seventh Symphony was written in the aftermath of conflict – its 1813 premiere was a benefit for soldiers wounded in the Napoleonic wars. Audiences responded eagerly: at one early performance, ‘applause rose to the point of ecstasy.’ Beethoven himself premiered his stormy and exalted piano concerto (1803). Pressed for time, he left some pages of the score blank except for a few hieroglyphs that only he could read.

Change of conductor and programme
Due to unforeseen scheduling issues, conductor Michael Tilson Thomas has had to withdraw from the LSO concert on Sunday 13 March 2011. Sir Colin Davis will take his place as conductor and the original opening work, Stravinsky Symphony in Three Movements, will now be performed on Sunday 20 March. (The soloist remains the same)
