Liszt’s demanding Symphonic Poem (1851) is inspired by Victor Hugo’s ballad, and has all of the energy of the tale of a page strapped to a madly galloping horse. His Second Piano Concerto (1857) is a notably intense piece, structured around a single compelling theme. Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique (1830) has all the drama one could wish for, telling the story of a lovestruck musician who overdoes the laudanum and suffers wild, supernatural hallucinations.
