Voltaire’s brilliantly sardonic novel subjects its naive hero to outrageous turns of fortune – earthquakes, inquisition, riches gained and squandered, love lost and found. Throughout his trials, Candide endeavours to believe that all is for the best in the best of all possible worlds. Leonard Bernstein’s music captures the novel’s wit and yearning, working with collaborators including Dorothy Parker, Lillian Hellman and Stephen Sondheim to create an immensely captivating and provocative musical.
