Interweaving war poetry by English author Wilfred Owen alongside liturgy from the Requiem Mass, Britten’s seminal
work was written for the reconsecration of Coventry Cathedral, after it had been destroyed by bombing in World War II. Writing to his sister, Britten rather unassumingly said ‘I hope it’ll make people think a bit’. It went on to be regarded as a public statement against the horrors of war.

Change of conductor
Due to recent health concerns, Sir Colin Davis has asked to reduce the number of his concert engagements with the LSO this autumn, and will therefore no longer be conducting the performances of Britten’s War Requiem on 9 and 11 October. We are delighted that Gianandrea Noseda, Conductor Laureate of the BBC Philharmonic, has agreed to step in to conduct in his place.

Sir Colin’s other concerts with the Orchestra are unaffected and he will still be appearing at the Barbican in December 2011 and April 2012.
