Mendelssohn’s landmark Violin Concerto (1844) is far more than a showcase for a virtuoso, but develops with wonderful delicacy. The great violinist Joseph Joachim declared that, of all the German violin concertos, ‘the dearest of them all, the heart’s jewel, is Mendelssohn’s.’ Elgar complained that the original audience for his Second Symphony (1911) was unappreciative (‘they sit there like a lot of stuffed pigs’), but listeners have grown to love this luminous and energetic work.
