When Mendelssohn visited Scotland in 1829, his imagination was captured by the romantically ruined chapel of Holyrood Castle: ‘I think I have today found the opening of my Scottish Symphony,’ he wrote. Elgar’s 1910 Violin Concerto also came from the heart: he was himself a violinist, and admitted that the piece was possibly ‘too emotional.’ It makes daunting demands on the soloist, but Elgar nonetheless believed ‘the music sings of memories and hope.’
