Prokofiev will dominate in this concert featuring Canadian violinist Leila Josefowicz. His First Violin Concerto was composed amid the whirlwind events of the Russian Revolution in 1917: it radiates hope and dashing energy. Optimism had turned to grim despair by 1942, when he composed music for Eisenstein’s film Ivan the Terrible. The fearsome, paranoid despot from Russia’s past seemed to prefigure Stalin’s iron rule, and the film was soon banned.
