Honegger described Joan of Arc at the Stake as a ‘dramatic oratorio’, a work which incorporates both singing and speaking roles to tell the story of the trial and execution of France’s most famous heroine. In a strikingly rich musical tapestry of chorales, Gregorian chant and modern jazz rhythms, with parts for saxophones and ondes Martenot, Honegger’s setting is a contemporary and poignantly reflective re-telling of Joan’s final days.
