Certainly, the conducting and playing were the main reasons for catching the production in Aix. Noseda presides over an uncut version of this mid-period score, Verdi’s first undisputable masterpiece, and brings thrilling momentum to the opera’s powerful melodrama, the LSO underpinning great mom­ents such as Rigoletto’s outburst of rage, Cortigiani, vil razza dannata (Vile and damned race of courtiers), with playing of convulsive, volcanic power. Noseda conducts the final act, with its great quartet and “storm” trio, in one momentous arch.

The quintessential drama of Verdi’s Rigoletto was in the Orchestra, thanks to the direction of fire and blood by Gianandrea Noseda, who draws an Italianate sound from the London Symphony Orchestra (the vibrato of the trumpets!). Even the acoustics of the orchestra pit for once were not a disastrous damper to the sound. And that changes everything!

The great joy of the Aix production is the rapport between Gianandrea Noseda, almost unknown in our country, and the London Symphony Orchestra. I confess that I have never heard Verdi played at this level, which is close to perfection, the violins in particular being miraculous, but it would be unfair to highlight certain parts compared to others as the pleasure is constant.

I’m seldom convinced by Arvo Pärt in the concert hall, but this moving performance of the Cantus in memoriam Benjamin Britten had a gentle solemnity to it, doubtless enhanced by the sound reverberating all around the cathedral. It was wonderfully played, too, by the LSO strings, directed by their leader Gordan Nikolitch.
