Panufnik Composers Workshop
LSO Futures
9-13 April 2013, Barbican and LSO St Luke's
LSO Futures celebrates the young composers at the cutting edge of new music through a week of events at the Barbican and LSO St Luke’s. On offer are premieres, glimpses behind the scenes in artist conversations and workshops, and chamber music performances on the Barbican foyers. Plus, two concerts conducted by François-Xavier Roth will place today’s music against the backdrop of the 20th century, revealing the profound influence that figures like Webern, Stravinsky, Pierre Boulez and John Adams continue to have on composers today.
The LSO has established a reputation for its support of emerging composers through its Panufnik Young Composers Scheme (set up in memory of Andrzej Panufnik), the new composer initiative based at LSO St Luke’s, LSO Soundhub, and, previously, the UBS Sound Adventures: Pioneers Scheme. LSO Futures throws the doors to these initiatives open, showcasing both the music of the future and the minds behind it. In the words of François-Xavier Roth, it’s an ‘homage to modernity, to new ways, and to creation’, a celebration of music in the 21st-century.
