Mahler’s Ninth Symphony was written in 1909 out of personal crisis: his daughter had died, his marriage had collapsed and he had been diagnosed with heart disease. Nonetheless, the symphony works through grief and anger towards a joyful acceptance of human destiny. Mstislav Rostropovich premiered Shostakovich’s expansive Second Cello Concerto on the composer’s 60th birthday in September 1966.
