Mahler’s Ninth Symphony was written in 1909 out of personal crisis: his daughter had died, his marriage had collapsed and he had been diagnosed with heart disease. Nonetheless, the symphony works through grief and anger towards a joyful acceptance of human destiny. Mahler left sketches for a tenth symphony, but the opening adagio movement is the most complete.
