Ticciati combined warm resonance with light etching of textures, sweet solemnity with the lithe flow and counterflow of voices and subsidiary rhythms. The third movement’s rustic serenade was resinous, earthy; the finale’s suppressed energy released with mighty force.

Ticciati's pacing and grasp of the architecture of the work were never in doubt, and the LSO rewarded him with polished playing, with some particularly thrilling work from the brass department.

Ticciati has won plaudits for his operatic conducting, and it’s not hard to see why. He was the most sensitive accompanist, carefully attentive to Maltman, and he drew some lovely contributions from the LSO’s wind players too.

The quality of the LSO’s playing and its supernatural responsiveness were enhanced by Ticciati’s incredible attention to detail. Every element of this sparse score was painfully exposed, and the way in which individual instruments shadowed Maltman’s extremes of expression and tone with pointillist flecks of colour and pitch was music-making of a very high degree.

Things improved in the later movements, but moments of quiet beauty in the slow movement and rhythmic brilliance in the scherzo couldn't quite save what was a rather uninvolving reading.
