Debussy deliberately placed the enigmatic titles of his Préludes at the end of each movement to allow the performer to construct their own sensory images. He wrote the beautiful Fantasy for Piano and Orchestra in a fraught period of self-doubt and consequently forbade it to be performed or published during his lifetime. Berlioz’ Symphonie fantastique recounts the doomed love affair of a man who has poisoned himself with opium, causing hallucinations of a masked ball, the countryside, a march to the scaffold and finally a witches’ Sabbath.
This concert is dedicated to the late Nigel Gomm, former LSO trumpeter, who passed away in October 2011.
