Elgar composed the elegiac Cello Concerto in 1919 from his secluded Sussex cottage where he had spent nights listening to the ominous sounds of World War I artillery rolling across the channel. Walton’s Symphony No 1 charts the composer’s tempestuous love affair with Baroness Imma von Doernberg. However, it was Walton’s new relationship with Alice Wimborne that provided inspiration for its ardent finale.
The concert will also feature a performance of HandsFree, a brand new piece written for the NYO by Anna Meredith. Featuring clapping, beatboxing and singing, it shows off the brilliance and vitality of the NYO - even without their instruments. Special thanks to Musicians Benevolent Fund for making this New Music 20x12 commission possible. New Music 20x12 is a UK-wide commissioning programme initiated by Jillian Barker and David Cohen, and delivered by PRS for Music Foundation in partnership with the BBC, LOCOG, Sound and Music and NMC Recordings.
