The stage version of Bartók’s ballet has a grim outlook, though it features much rhythmic vitality and sharp, vivid colours. LSO Principal Flute Gareth Davies takes centre stage for Nielsen’s Concerto – a work reflecting the modernist trends of the 1920s. Despite being in exile from the Nazis and recovering from a failed love affair, Zemlinsky stayed defiant – his symphonic poem, based on the story by Hans Christian Andersen, has moments of bittersweet lyricism and exuberance.
