Sir Colin Davis and Mitsuko Uchida present a series combining Beethoven piano concertos with symphonies by Haydn and Nielsen. Beethoven’s dynamic Third Piano Concerto was unfinished when the composer himself premiered it in 1803 – ‘I saw nothing but empty pages,’ his page-turner marvelled. Haydn’s spirited and melodic symphony is nicknamed the 'Oxford' as it accompanied the composer receipt of an honorary doctorate in 1791. There’s an optimistic energy too in Nielsen’s First Symphony (1894).
