Haydn’s Symphony No 98 is the sixth of the twelve ‘London’ symphonies he composed during his first ever trip to the city. The premiere of Piano Concerto No 4 marked Beethoven’s last performance as soloist with an orchestra due to his encroaching deafness. Each of the four movements of Nielsen’s Symphony No 2 was inspired by a caricature of ‘The Four Temperaments’ Nielsen came across in a country pub; of Choleric, Phlegmatic, Melancholic and Sanguine, Nielsen found the most lingering image to be the ‘Choleric’ man on horseback, who forever thrashes his sword at thin air.
