Sir Simon Rattle  

Sir Simon Rattle OM CBE

Music Director Designate

The London Symphony Orchestra is delighted to announce the appointment of Sir Simon Rattle as its Music Director. He will take up his appointment in September 2017. 

Simon Rattle first appeared with the LSO in October 1977, at the age of 22. More recently he conducted the Orchestra at the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games, and in acclaimed concerts at the Barbican Centre in 2015.

He is currently Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Berliner Philharmoniker, where he was appointed in 2002. He was awarded a Knighthood by Her Majesty the Queen for his services to music in 1994 and received the Order of Merit in the 2014 New Year’s Honours.

Daniel Harding

Principal Guest Conductor

’My little genius’ is how Claudio Abbado referred to Daniel Harding when he was Assistant Conductor at the Berlin Philharmonic over a decade years ago. Now firmly established as Principal Conductor of two orchestras in Europe, Daniel brings his explosive energy, charisma, talent and adventurous programming as the LSO’s Principal Guest Conductor, cementing a relationship of over 20 years.

Gianandrea Noseda  

Gianandrea Noseda

Principal Guest Conductor

Widely recognized as one of the leading conductors of his generation, Gianandrea Noseda was recently appointed Principal Guest Conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra from the 2016/17 season. In the 2017/18 season he will also become Music Director of the National Symphony Orchestra at The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.

Michael Tilson Thomas   

Michael Tilson Thomas

Conductor Laureate

A Bernstein protégé, MTT came to the Orchestra as Principal Conductor in 1987, bringing with him his brilliantly devised thematic concert series and his Discovery concert lectures. He subsequently became Principal Guest Conductor, and after more than 40 years with the LSO, steps up to Conductor Laureate from the 2016/17 season. He conducts the Orchestra every season.

André Previn   

André Previn KBE

Conductor Emeritus

Principal Conductor of the LSO from 1968–1979, André Previn presided over the Orchestra during what have become known as the 'glamorous years'. Charismatic, youthful and showbizzy, he brought the LSO to the masses through André Previn's Music Night. Now he brings his years of experience to his position of Conductor Emeritus, appearing with the LSO each season.

Niklas Benjamin Hoffmann

Assistant Conductor

The position of Assistant Conductor is awarded to the winner of the biennial Donatella Flick LSO Conducting Competition. Niklas Benjamin Hoffmann was the winner of the 2016 competition.

Simon Halsey  

Simon Halsey CBE

Choral Director

Simon Halsey took up the post as the LSO's Choral Director in September 2012, simultaneously becoming the Chorus Director at the London Symphony Chorus and strengthening the partnership between the two. Simon is a sought-after conductor of choral repertoire at the very highest level and an ambassador for choral singing across the world.
