Sibelius wrote his only concerto (1903) for the violin – the instrument he himself played. It is full of ardent melody and sheer panache. Surrounding the concerto are two pieces by Scandinavian masters drawn from the well of storytelling. Nielsen’s Aladdin Suite is as colourful and rumbustious as you might expect. Grieg’s endearing 1887 suite drawn from his incidental music to Ibsen’s Peer Gynt encompasses dreamy mystery and trollish energy.
Change of artist
Due to injury, the violinist Julia Fischer has been forced to withdraw from this concert at extremely short notice.
We are delighted that the LSO's Leader, Roman Simovic, has agreed to step in to play the Sibelius Violin Concerto.
