Mahler’s First Symphony (1889) was originally described as a ‘symphonic poem in two parts.’ The premiere was not a success, but he continued to revise the work until 1907. It retains an impetuous youthful energy – defying the mundane and insisting on the joy of life. Rodion Shchedrin is himself a piano virtuoso and his fourth concerto (1991) draws on his own dashing mastery of the instrument, amid an atmosphere of mystery and alarm.
This concert is dedicated to Maurice Murphy, the LSO's former Principal Trumpet, who passed away on Thursday 28 October.
