Shostakovich’s First Piano Concerto (1933) is full of zingy wit. He composed this enjoyable work to showcase his own gifts at the keyboard, but wrote his second (1957) for his son Maxim – the result is an immensely appealing piece, with its ‘maddeningly catchy’ melodies. Tchaikovsky’s Third Symphony – his only symphony in a major key – derives its nickname from the Polish dance rhythms that animate the final movement.
