In the last concert of the 2014/15 season, the LSO Discovery Choirs, LSO Community Choir and Guildhall Symphony Orchestra join the LSO under the baton of Sir Simon Rattle in a new children's opera, The Monster in the Maze by Jonathan Dove.

The opera involves a large choir and orchestra with a mix of professional and student singers and players, and tells the story of the rescue from the Labyrinth, by Theseus, of young Athenians sent to Crete as a sacrifice to the Minotaur.

The opera was co-commissioned by the LSO with the Berliner Philharmoniker and the Aix-en-Provence Festival. It received its world premiere in Berlin in June, and two further performances by the LSO and the Mediterranean Youth Orchestra at the Aix-en-Provence Festival on 8 & 9 July.

Walton's First Symphony was written eighty years ago, and was partially premiered by the LSO. This tempestuous work reflects the turbulent emotions surrounding the composer’s complicated love life at the time, especially in its overtly malicious scherzo, and ardent slow movement. During this performance students from the Guildhall School will play side-by-side in the orchestra with LSO musicians, valuable experience for future professional orchestral musicians.
