Sir Antonio Pappano opens the first of a pair of programmes with Bartók’s early First Violin Concerto, written for the composer’s first love Stefi Geyer, who sadly rejected both him and the concerto. Championed after Bartók’s death by David Oistrakh, it is played here by the brilliant young Dutch violinist Janine Jansen, a great favourite with LSO audiences. The enchanting divertissement-like second act of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker ballet creates a magical aura.
